Castle Weddings in Scotland

Scotland abounds in ancient castles, and many of the most stunning castles, some with moats and drawbridges, are available for weddings and honeymoons.  If you are looking for a unique way to mark your most special wedding day, nothing beats a wedding in a genuine 12th century castle!

If fact, if you’ve always dreamed of a castle wedding, there is probably no country in the world that makes it easier for you to make your dreams come true than Scotland.

To begin with, the Scottish Marriage Act of 1977 makes it possible for a civil wedding ceremony to be held in virtually any castle in Scotland.  All that’s required is for the castle to be on the list of officially sanctioned wedding locations.  If the castle you want to be married in isn’t already on the list, you need to fill out some forms and pay a small fee to get the castle of your dreams placed on the list.

If you want a religious castle wedding ceremony then it’s up to your minister or priest or rabbi or other religious official to decide whether or not they will conduct your ceremony in the castle you’ve chosen.  Scottish law allows them to conduct castle weddings if they deem them proper.

Many couples who are already legally married (either in Scotland or in another country) come to Scotland in order to hold a symbolic wedding ceremony in a real 12th to 16th century castle.

It’s very common for couples to hold a fun Middle Ages or Renaissance castle wedding, with everyone in full costume and using formal speech from the times, followed by a huge feast, often cooked over open fires in keeping with the theme of the wedding.

But regardless of whether you are holding a symbolic wedding, a civil ceremony, or a full religious castle wedding ceremony, there are a few basics that you can always count on.  First, the castle staff will do everything possible to treat everyone like royalty, the food will be sumptuous, and the castle grounds will provide plenty of opportunities for some of the best wedding photos and video that you could ever ask for.

For many couples a castle wedding seems like an unobtainable dream, but the reality is that a castle wedding, especially in Scotland, may be a lot easier to arrange than you ever thought possible.  Why not find out just how easy it is to arrange for a castle wedding in Scotland, and see if you can bring someone’s dream to life!
